With the aid of excellent illustrations, Schürch and Fehr¹ discussed the surgical therapy of malignant metastases in the cervical lymph nodes and presented the results of surgical intervention in 113 cases. In their experience the following factors have been of much importance: 1. Block dissection on the side of the lesion must be complete, with the removal of all submental, submaxillary and deep jugular lymph nodes, together with resection of the nodes external to and deep to the sternomastoid muscle. 2. Definitely better results may be expected from surgical treatment than from irradiation. 3. The benefit to be had from dissection will be greatly reduced if the cancerous growth has broken through the capsule of the lymph nodes and has invaded the interstitial soft tissues. 4.
