Among recent therapeutic agents which are showing startling successful results in conditions which have hitherto responded to treatment slowly or not at all, synthetic vitamin B1 deserves closer attention than it is receiving in the field of ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology. My purpose in presenting this case report is to direct attention to the possibilities of this new form of therapy, in the hope that its application may be extended to other conditions in which it is likely to prove of benefit.

Lewy called attention to the fact that the basic factor common to most, if not all, neuropathies, whether they are due to diabetes; pregnancy; alcoholism; hunger; cachexia; pernicious anemia; poisoning with heavy metals, such as lead, mercury, manganese, bismuth, antimony or chromium; metalloid poisoning with arsenic or phosphorus; poisoning with carbon disulfide; infectious diseases, such as yellow fever, typhus, typhoid and paratyphoid, diphtheria, tuberculosis and leprosy, or . . .
