CONTRIBUTION TO SYMPTOMATOLOGY OF FOREIGN BODIES IN THE AIR PASSAGES

I have made a comparison of statistics concerning the incidence of foreign bodies in the respiratory passages of patients in the old Russia, the Soviet Russia and Western Europe. The following series were used: (1) that of Preobraschensky,1 up to 1890, (2) that of Albrecht,2 from 1911 to 1921, and (3) that of Chevalier Jackson.3 Preobraschensky reported 702 cases. The foreign bodies in 119 cases were beans; in 103, bones; in 4, watermelon seeds; in 4, pumpkin seeds, and in 3, seeds of other melons. In 16 per cent the bodies were metallic. There was only one instance of a sunflower seed. In Albrecht's series there was a percentage rate of 40 for metallic bodies, 12 for bones, 12 for sunflower seeds, 6 for watermelon seeds, 4 for pumpkin seeds and 25 for beans.
