I have made a comparison of statistics concerning the incidence of foreign bodies in the respiratory passages of patients in the old Russia, the Soviet Russia and Western Europe. The following series were used: (1) that of Preobraschensky,¹ up to 1890, (2) that of Albrecht,² from 1911 to 1921, and (3) that of Chevalier Jackson.³ Preobraschensky reported 702 cases. The foreign bodies in 119 cases were beans; in 103, bones; in 4, watermelon seeds; in 4, pumpkin seeds, and in 3, seeds of other melons. In 16 per cent the bodies were metallic. There was only one instance of a sunflower seed. In Albrecht's series there was a percentage rate of 40 for metallic bodies, 12 for bones, 12 for sunflower seeds, 6 for watermelon seeds, 4 for pumpkin seeds and 25 for beans.
