I have used the retractor shown in the accompanying illustration for two years and have found it useful as an anterior pillar retractor after tonsils are removed and the retractor turned up in the upper pole. It holds the fossa open at the top to facilitate the ligation of bleeding vessels at the top of the fossa. The shaft of the instrument is bent at an angle, so as not to obstruct the operator's view.
