The title explains the scope of this manual, which the reviewer does not hesitate to pronounce the most important and most complete statement that has yet appeared in the field of bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy and gastroscopy. There is no effort to record progress in this field historically, but the aim is rather to present clearly the basic points. The enormous widening of the field of bronchoscopy for diseases of other than foreign-body origin has necessitated rewriting the chapters dealing with the various phases of bronchoscopy.
