Through the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, I collected some data on the bacteriology of acute infections of the middle ear and mastoid from 300 cases referred for myringotomy from the clinics of Dr. Duel, Dr. Fowler and Dr. Haskin and from my own clinic. As these findings differ from those heretofore reported by others, I feel that a description of how they were obtained is called for.

METHOD OF STUDY

Only cases of acute infection of the middle ear in which myringotomy was indicated are included in this series. The duration of the infection in the whole group varied from a few hours to three weeks, the average being seven days.
