Laryngologists are unanimous in their opinion that early diagnosis and complete surgical extirpation are essential in the successful treatment of cancer of the larynx. Careful selection of patients, adequate preoperative preparation, improved methods of anesthesia, perfection of surgical technic and proper postoperative care have contributed enormously to the safety of surgical treatment so that the operative mortality rate has reached an incredibly low level. To reduce further the mortality rate of cancer of the larynx it will be necessary to improve diagnostic methods, particularly from the standpoint of early diagnosis, and to add to the knowledge regarding degrees of malignancy and metastasis.

It has been estimated that approximately 4 per cent of all malignant tumors occur in the larynx, and that about 98 per cent of these belong to the squamous cell variety.
