A 31-YEAR-OLD black man presented with a neck mass. He had first noticed a slowly growing lump in his neck 7 years earlier. At that time, he had no systemic symptoms or abnormal findings on physical examination. His physician performed a fine-needle aspiration of the mass and told him that it was a benign lesion that needed no further medical treatment. Then, recently, he noticed that the mass had increased in size. He denied having any local or systemic symptoms. Careful review of his medical and family history did not reveal any significant disease.
