(2) Using magnetic resonance imaging cross-sectional area to calculate the volume of acoustic neuromas in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2, Mona Abaza, MD, and coauthors, San Antonio, Tex, studied the growth characteristics and associated audiologic parameters of these tumors. While the average growth rate of acoustic neuromas in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 was 0.30 cm/y, the rate was significantly higher in older patients and in patients with spinal tumors. For these two groups, Dr Abaza recommends close follow-up with baseline magnetic resonance imaging and serial audiograms and aggressive treatment.
