I am writing in regard to the article that appeared cerning the combined otolaryngology society meeting that was held in Palm Beach, Fla, from May 7 through 13, 1994. I read the comment regarding my presentation on the Bacteriology of Chronic Sinusitis in Adults. I have the following comments to make: (1) some of the data are misquoted. The cultures that yielded anaerobes were 7.6% and not 0%, and the aerobes were 76.3% and not 73.7%. It is interesting that David Fairbanks, MD, made the comment that all previous data showed anaerobes to be the majority of microorganisms in chronic sinusitis. That is true in the majority of studies that were performed in the 1970s and 1980s, whereby the majority of specimens were obtained from the maxillary sinuses; however, in recent studies^2-7 that were performed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, especially after the introduction of endoscopic sinus . . .
