Pathologic Quiz Case 1

A 47-YEAR-OLD man presented with a swelling of the left cheek and spontaneous avulsion of the first right premolar. He had worked in a shoe factory for 15 years, and he was a heavy cigarette smoker and moderate alcohol drinker. A computed tomographic scan showed a massive opacity of the left maxillary sinus. Biopsy material was obtained from the lesion, and a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma was rendered. The patient underwent a partial maxillectomy. Three months later, bilateral laterocervical metastases were clinically detected. A right radical neck dissection and a left modified neck dissection were performed. Histologically, metastatic squamous cell carcinoma was found in two lymph nodes from the upper right side of the neck.
