I read with interest the comments concerning testing children before myringotomy with tubes so as to prove sensorineural loss preoperatively and to avoid blame for sensorineural loss by using the procedure that appeared in the American Society of Pediartic Otolaryngology News section above.
A review of a few cases in my practice showed that about half of my patients are younger than 3 years of age and it is not practical to test them. I would agree that pure-tone audiometry should be performed on almost any patient at any age if hearing loss is suspected, but it is not practical to do so in infants and children. We do like to have impedance test results on these children.
