Pathologic Quiz Case 1

A 21-month-old white boy was reported to have struck the right side of his face on a table while playing the evening prior to evaluation. A minimal amount of bleeding was noted. After the accident, the parents reported an irritated area of mucosa, but no masses were present. The following morning, the mother noticed the development of an intraoral mass. The mass was nontender and did not cause any difficulties in eating or breathing. No other medical problems were reported.
On examination, a fleshy red-blue mass was seen extending from the right side of the oral cavity. The mass measured approximately 1.5x3.0 cm and was attached to the right buccal mucosa via a stalk (Figure 1).
