The plenary session dealing with facial chemical peeling was most interesting in its discussion of compounds that may stimulate collagen synthesis and rejuvenation without first resulting in necrosis. The -hydroxy acid compounds show great promise in this regard.
A new technique for reducing the columella was presented by Anthony Reino, MD, and William Lawson, MD, New York, NY. A full-thickness diamond-shaped piece of skin is excised between the medial crural feet. The incision is carried through the skin, depressor septi muscle, and soft tissue. This allows approximation of the medial crura with a permanent stitch and subsequent closure of the incision in a vertical orientation. The authors describe the scar as negligible. They have found this procedure reliable for narrowing splayed medial crura, increasing the nasolabial angle, modifying the shape of the nares, and increasing tip projection.
