The patient was first admitted to Mount Sinai Hospital in 1924, with a history of a subacute illness, including pain over the right side of the body, hematuria and a mass in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. An exploratory laparotomy was done, which showed a mass high up above the right lobe of the liver. This was exposed by a second operation, and was found to be a cyst, the fluid from which showed the presence of hooklets and scolices. Marsupialization was performed on the cyst, and the patient was discharged from the hospital with a fistula.
The presence of an echinococcus cyst was definitely established.
A month after leaving the hospital the patient was readmitted with a pneumonic infiltration at the base of the right lung, with a small effusion.
One year later the marsupium was completely obliterated, the hematuria had ceased, and the patient was symptom-free until
