The natural history of nonoperated acoustic neuromas was presented by Barry Strasnick, MD, and collaborators, Nashville, Tenn. They presented a series in which the diagnosis had been made by imaging but no surgery performed initially because of tumor size, good hearing, advanced age, medical conditions, and/or patient preference. Mean size was 1.03 cm. Six months' to 11 years' follow-up was reported. Growth rate averaged 0.11 cm per year. There was no growth in 16 of 50 tumors. Twenty-four percent of patients needed surgery because of progression of the tumor. Early tumor growth rate may be predictive of those who will need surgical removal of the neuroma. (1)
