To the Editor.—By questioning the size of tumors on live mice pictured in the article by Shikani et al,1 Brown has provided an important contribution to the process of peer review. Brown's letter resulted in the promulgation of a new policy for the ARCHIVES to ensure that all studies on animals must affirm that the methods were performed in accordance with a protocol approved by the institutional animal care and use committee. In this particular case, the study had been approved by The Johns Hopkins (Baltimore, Md) committee; however, there was insufficient clarification of criteria for killing animals with large tumors. The resultant institutional review has raised the level of sensitivity to this issue among the investigators and the committee members. We are all grateful for Brown's vigilance and leadership.
