In Reply.—Thank you for allowing me to respond to the letter by Brown, regarding an article for which I was the senior author. First, you should be assured that the animals used in this study were cared for and examined under protocols approved by The Johns Hopkins Animal Care and Use Committee. We have reviewed this in detail and all of the proposed procedures were stringently enforced throughout the period of this experiment.

In the conduct of this investigation, the mice undergoing tumor transplantation were followed up closely to ensure that no significant level of discomfort was evident by the animals. During the experiment, the experimental group displayed a tumor reduction and then growth while the control tumors continued to grow.
