In Reply.—The evaluation of tonsil core tissue homgenate for Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma pneumoniae as an alternate method to surface culture is new, and we appreciate Dr Hammerschlag's critical review of our article and the issues raised. Howev
er, we feel that our study was indeed sound. As Dr Hammerschlag points out, there is some serologic cross-reactivity between C trachomatis and Chlamydia pneumoniae; therefore, the possibility does exist for C trachomatis to be present in tonsil core tissue. We do agree that C pneumoniae deserves further investigation. Our Navy grant proposal was formulated in 1988, prior to the designation of C pneumoniae as a new species in 1989. In addition, the commercial nonavailablility of proper controls for C pneumoniae during our study would have made it almost impossible for our laboratory to test for it.
