It was with great interest that I read Paparella's historical vignette on Kyoshiro Yamakawa in the June 1992 issue of the ARCHIVES. The article reminded us that the first published description of endolymphatic hydrops and associated Meniere's disease was in 1938. In most English-language literature, the first article was credited to Hallpike and Cairns.¹ However, Paparella reminds us that Yamakawa's description predated this article by 6 months.²

For historical purposes, I would like to point out that in 1908, `Ruttin clearly described endolymphatic hydrops in a patient with a single attack of deafness, tinnitus, and vertigo.^1-3 Although he did not attribute these pathologic findings to "Meniere's disease," let us not forget that our present knowledge has come from a long succession of hard work and observations by many brilliant and prescient physicians and scientists. . . .
