In Reply.—We appreciate the comments of Snyderman et al. We excluded patients with positive surgical margins as well as patients with extracapsular spread. We attempted to exclude as many variables as possible so that the main issue of wound infection could be more clearly analyzed.

Snyderman et al note that our two groups of patients had similar tumor staging but criticize our study for not breaking down the groups into specific T- and N-stage classifications. We specifically did not try to divide our two groups into smaller groups because we believed that it was not necessary to match patient for patient regarding T and N staging if the overall staging was comparable. Snyderman et al mentioned that their unpublished study of wound infection in patients with head and neck cancer showed opposite results than did our study; however, they looked at many different anatomic sites whereas we only looked . . .
