The Triological Society presented its two major awards for distinguished theses of incoming fellows. Vanessa Schweitzer, MD, presented her Fowler Award–winning thesis discussing cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. In a series of experiments using guinea pigs, she demonstrated that phosphoric acid antibiotics (fosfomycin) and nonglucocorticoid 21-amino steroids reduced the amount of outer hair cell loss following cisplatin therapy. The Mosher Award was presented to Myles Pensak, MD, for his clinical study of the cavernous sinus. A thorough anatomic study of this complex region was presented, followed by implications for surgical approaches to mass lesions in a series of patients. (37)
