The Southern Section Meeting of the Triological Society was held from January 16 through 18,1992, at Sea Island, Ga. Fifty-three papers were presented.
John Teichgraeber, MD, described his experience with 10 patients using a temporoparietal fascial flap in orbital reconstruction. The author recommended delaying the flap in contaminated and poorly vascularized wounds when a large pericranial extension is required.
J. Andrew Burnam, MD, described his experience with the subcutaneous pedicle extension flap in 35 cases. This random flap should be twice the length of the defect to which it is intended to cover. Advantages of this one-stage procedure include good color match from contiguous tissue and closure without tension in areas of free margins. Some concern was expressed that this flap turns 180° on its blood supply, but no graft failures were reported.
