To the Editor.—The article on systemic steroids for otitis media with infusion in children by Rosenfeld et al that appeared in the September 1991 issue of the ARCHIVES deserves comment. The fact that steroids are effective for clearing this frequent problem in the middle ear strengthens my insistence that allergies are responsible. These allergies most often are to foods, especially in children younger than 5 years of age; they will not be suspected or detected by conventional allergists who ignore foods and test only for inhalants. Clinical ecologists are needed, with their diagnostic skills, to detect the food or foods responsible. The result will be a prompt clearing of the fluid in the middle ear without ventilating tubes or without steroids, at a considerable saving of expense. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
