Several papers were presented at ASPO specifically dealing with the treatment and management of tonsillectomy patients. Drs Mark Pulin and Herbert Birck, Columbus, Ohio, presented a paper entitled "Postoperative Morbidity in Tonsillectomy and Adenotonsillectomy Patients." The authors described a 3-month prospective evaluation of immediate postoperative morbidity associated with this surgery. Of their 453 patients, 33% suffered significant morbidity at 1 hour including emesis, moderate-tosevere pain, increased temperature, or decreased level of consciousness. Twenty-seven percent still had emesis at 9 hours postoperatively, while 15% had severe pain. Significant bleeding occurred in four patients (0.8%). A survey of parents showed that 97% of parents stayed with their children in the hospital, and 89% preferred inpatient care. Sixty-four percent of parents felt that they could not take care of their children at home.
