A special joint session of the ASPO and the American Bronchoesophagologic Association was convened on the second day of the 1992 meeting. The guest of honor, Dr Bruce Benjamin, Sidney, Australia, discussed laryngeal intubation trauma and showed a variety of endoscopic pictures. He recommended earlier and more systematic evaluation of the infant who undergoes intubation. Dr Benjamin advanced a scheme of evaluation to include early and late changes and defined a number of terms including "tongues of granulation" and "healed furrow." He also outlined a flow chart of progression of laryngeal injury. The main point of his very elaborate and well-done presentation was that endoscopic evaluation of acute intubation trauma is the only accurate means of assessing site, nature, and degree of injury. This determination permits a decision of whether to perform a tracheotomy or continue long-term intubation. Dr Benjamin recommended continued intubation if there was edema of the vocal
