For 12 years, Byron J. Bailey, MD, has ably stood watch at the helm of the ARCHIVES, the written guardian of our specialty. And what a 12 years it has been!
Reflecting the widening scope and aspirations of our professional interests, we have seen the journal change its name from the Archives of Otolaryngology to the Archives of Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery. We have seen descriptive anatomic study, whole animal physiology, and the early techniques of cell biology give way to the sophisticated techniques of cell biology and physiology, and, more recently, to the techniques of molecular biology and genetics. Clinical investigations progressed from retrospective reviews that were carried out with little or no statistical techniques or analyses to the increasing use of prospective clinical trials with careful attention to appropriate study design, randomization, and statistical analyses.
