PATHOLOGIC QUIZ CASE 1
Matthew Lando, MD; Elliot Abemayor, MD; Vivian Mendoza, MD, Torrance, Calif
A 15-year-old girl presented with a slowly enlarging 1.5-cm left parotid mass. She had no history of sialadenitis, sialolithiasis, or trauma. The mass was firm, well circumscribed, and non-tender with normal surrounding skin and facial nerve function. A fine-needle aspiration biopsy demonstrated a dominant spindle cell population with occasional multinucleated giant cells. These findings were consistent with a low-grade mesenchymal tumor (Fig 1). At surgery, a solid mass was found in the midportion of the superficial lobe of the parotid gland. There was an associated small tract extending to the capsule of the temporomandibular joint. The histologic appearance of the neoplasm is shown in Figs 2 and 3.
