Thyroidectomy Under Local Anesthesia

At the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery meeting, Palm Beach, Fla, April 1990, Dr Marcelo Hochman presented the Stanford (Calif) University experience entitled "Thyroidectomy Under Local Anesthesia." Thyroid surgery has been done under local anesthesia in Europe with good patient acceptance. Dr Hochman and his coworkers have performed thyroidectomies using local anesthesia in 21 patients and compared the advantages with a similar group of patients having thyroidectomy under general anesthesia. The estimated blood loss was less under local anesthesia, but there was no difference in operative time or length of hospital stay. Only one patient did not tolerate the procedure and had to be converted to general anesthesia. There were no associated complications. The ideal candidates were young and had good experiences previously with local anesthesia.
