At the recent meeting of the 1990 Southern Section of the Triological Society in White Sulfur Springs, WVa, Steven Sobol, MD, presented a paper in conjunction with Mark May, MD, in which they attempted to clarify some of the nuances of the anatomical variations encountered in functional endoscopic sinus surgery. They feel that a detailed awareness of the anatomy involved in these surgical procedures will help to prevent the complications that may be encountered.

They especially feel that a sharpened awareness of the anatomy of the infundibulum and the natural ostium helps to prevent intraorbital inocular complications. In an effort to define the infundibulum and its boundaries and to clarify the location of the natural maxillary ostium, a three-dimensional study was undertaken of 10 parasagittally-sectioned cadavers, as well as an additional 30 subjects who were studied endoscopically.
