Otolaryngology-head and neck surgery continues to be a vibrant and exciting specialty because of the incorporation of new technology, new interest, and new knowledge. The discipline of pediatric otolaryngology, like otology, head and neck surgery, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, is an addition to our specialty that will enhance our ability to improve medical care to our patients.

Historically, pediatric otolaryngology was spearheaded by a few individuals including Drs Charles Ferguson, Seymour Cohen, Blair Fearon, and Gabriel Tucker. In the field of surgery, Dr Robert Gross initiated the impetus for full-time subspecialization in pediatrics. This, together with many advances in technology, paved the way for pediatric subspecialization in other surgical disciplines and related fields such as anesthesia, radiology, and pathology.
