A 40-year-old black woman with a history of asthma and chronic sinusitis presented complaining of a 1-month history of hoarseness and a 6-day history of increasing dyspnea. The patient stated, "My throat is closing up."
Physical examination revealed laryngeal stridor, worse in the supine position, with moderate respiratory distress. Erythema and edema of the supraglottic area, particularly involving the left side of the epiglottis and aryepiglottic fold, were noted on indirect laryngoscopy.
Subsequently, direct laryngoscopy was performed and biopsy samples of the edematous epiglottis and false vocal cords were taken. The histopathologic findings are illustrated in Figs 1 and 2.
