Digitally Programmable Hearing System

At the 1989 Triological Society meeting in San Francisco, Calif, Rodney Perkins, Palo Alto, Calif, and coauthors Fred Waldhauer, Vincent Pluvinage, Anthony J. Becker, and Carlos Baez, Redwood City, Calif, presented their development of a digital hearing system. They noted that only one fourth of the 14 to 20 million hearing-impaired persons in the United States currently use hearing devices, and often those devices that are dispensed do not provide adequate rehabilitation. This is largely due to the narrowed dynamic range manifested in patients with sensorineural deafness. A digital hearing system composed of a work station that provides dynamic range assessment to create a digital program "tailormade" to the patient being fitted was described. The second component in the system is a prescriptive compression device fitted into an ear mold shell.
