Brian Blakley, MD, and Julian M. Nedzelski, MD, Toronto, described their series of six patients with facial nerve neuromas at the January 1988 meeting of the Eastern Section of the Triological Society held in New York City. They feel that an attempt should be made to remove the tumor without sacrifice of the facial nerve. The authors feel this can be accomplished in some cases with intracapsular debulking of the tumor followed by removal of the capsule from the nerve, beginning inferiorly and working superiorly. Of their six patients, three had tumors in the area of the geniculate ganglion; the other three patients had tumors in various locations within the temporal bone. Tumors located in the tympanic cavity and mastoid were operated on via a facial recess approach.
