At the recent Eastern Section meeting of the Triological Society, Drs Johnson and Yu reported the results of a double-blind clinical trial comparing perioperative administration of clindamycin alone vs clindamycin plus gentamicin in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing composite resection of their primary tumor and neck disease. The infection rate was identical and very low in both groups. They conclude that the prophylactic administration of antibiotics effective against gram-negative aerobic rods is unnecessary in patients undergoing this type of surgery.
