A series of 13 patients, seen over a six-year period, with squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue managed by a transcervical pharyngotomy and supraglottic laryngectomy were described by Drs Dennis M. Moore and Thomas C. Calcaterra, Los Angeles, at the Western Section Triological Society meeting in Coronado, Calif. The average age of the patients was 63 years, with an age range of 53 to 80 years. The male-to-female incidence was equal. Most cases were stage III and IV disease, with 70% having lymph node involvement. No patients had tumor extending beyond the circumvallate papillae. The area was reconstructed with a pectoralis major musculocutaneous flap in three patients. Postoperatively, a pharyngocutaneous fistula arose in five patients, one had aspiration pneumonia, one had a wound slough, and one sustained osteomyelitis of the sternoclavicular joint. Postoperative irradiation therapy was given to 11 patients.
