The history of the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery (ASHNS), from its beginnings through its 25th anniversary, has been shared with the society's membership, both young and old, by George A. Sisson, MD, through his book, The Head and Neck Story. Six otolaryngologists informally met during a recess in the program at the Third Annual Meeting of the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons in 1957 and discussed, among other things, their frustration at not being allowed to join the society as full members. The Original Six, as Dr Sisson called them, included Drs W. Franklin Keim, John Loré, John S. Lewis, Edwin W. Cocke, William K. Trible, and George A. Sisson.
