The Second International Head and Neck Oncology Research Conference was held in Arlington, Va, Sept 10 through 12, 1987. The conference emphasized the current knowledge and recent developments in areas of basic science as well as clinical research as it pertains to head and neck oncology. Several areas of research were highlighted, including cytogenetics, in vitro models for therapy development, tumor immunology, histopathology and tumor markers, cell biology, cell culturing, virology, growth factors, flow cytometry, and mechanisms of resistance. In the clinical area, typical highlighted topics included radiation therapy, combinations of chemotherapy and radiation, altered fractionation radiation therapy, induction and adjuvant chemotherapy, intra-arterial therapy, rehabilitation, and surgical reconstruction.
It is apparent that much information has been gained in the basic sciences toward the effort of understanding the biology of head and neck cancer since the First International Head and Neck Oncology Research Conference held in 1984. Likewise, alternative approaches toward
