Kiyonori Harii, MD, was the plastic surgery educational foundation Maliniac lecturer at the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery meeting, Atlanta, November, 1987. The topic of his presentation was "Microsurgery Comes of Age." Practicing in Tokyo for the last 15 years, Dr Harii presented an overview of 938 cases of free-tissue transfer since the early 1970s. He identified the evolution, as well as the importance, of customization of free-tissue transfer in the reconstruction of numerous defects of the extremity, trunk, and head and neck area. Of particular interest to the head and neck surgeon was Dr Harii's preference for the groin flap in reconstructing defects in children, as well as women, because of its thinness and pliability and ease of primary closure of the donor site.
