At the recent spring meeting of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Palm Beach, Fla, Drs Arnold Komisar and Steven Warman, both of New York, presented a critical analysis of their experience with A-O plating in mandibular reconstruction. They reported on 11 patients followed up for up to four years. Eight of these patients underwent immediate reconstruction using free bone grafts or A-O plates alone. Donor sites for the bone grafts were the iliac crest and metatarsal bone. Delayed reconstruction of the mandible was performed on three patients, all of whom had undergone radiotherapy. Hyperbaric oxygen was not used in any of these cases. Specific variables that the authors wished to address in this study included complication rates, cosmetic results, functional results, length of hospitalization, and whether myocutaneous flaps were beneficial.
