Paranasal Sinus Malignancy

Kim Davis, MD, and associates, of the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, presented the results of their group's study of paranasal sinus malignancy at the Eastern Section Meeting of the Triological Society. These cases were culled from a tumor registry that services the Salt Lake City area, as well as other areas in the country, and covered the ten-year time period from 1971 to 1981. Of the 676 cases of carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses, 49% were squamous cell carcinoma and 10% were adenoid cystic carcinoma, with a variety of other types of tumors noted. Sixty-five percent of the tumors were stage III or IV, with the maxillary sinus most frequently involved in the ethmoidal region. Regional metastasis to neck nodes occurred in only 2% of the cases, whereas the rate of distant metastasis was observed to be 41%, with squamous cell carcinoma metastasizing distantly in 26% of the . . .
