In Reply.—Dr Tarnopolsky and Dr Davidson have differing opinions on the best approach to recertification. Clearly, this topic is unpopular, and there is confusion regarding which avenues to pursue. For the time being, study of recertification methods should continue, because the public appears to be interested in the quality of the health care that is available. For the present, no action is warranted, because there is no evidence that one system is better than the others.

However, we must remember that we exist to serve our patients. If we lose their trust and respect through unreasonable, prolonged inaction, we shall not be serving them well. At this point, it does not appear that the issue of public reassurance will "go away." Let us search, together, for the best system for achieving this essentia reassurance. . . .
