Medical Recertification

To the Editor.—In the September issue of the ARCHIVES,1 once again the question of medical recertification is put on the front burner. Dr T. M. Davidson suggests a novel idea of making the recertification mandated by a two-week course at a university center, half of it spent in basic sciences, followed by a written examination. All of this would be preceded by a six-month home update program also followed by an examination. The cycle would repeat itself for doctors every 5, 7, or 10 years.

I see nothing but trouble with this idea. Let us have the response from the majority, who are the working stiffs in the front lines. The plan above, although well-intentioned, is a clinical, pedagogical, and clerical . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
