PATHOLOGIC QUIZ CASE 1

A 65-year-old man presented with complaints of decreased hearing bilaterally and a history of recurrent cerumen impactions. Findings from the head and neck examination were within normal limits with the exception of two small cutaneous lesions, one located on the antihelical fold of the right ear and the other at the medial canthus of the left eye. Both lesions were raised, skin colored, and less than 0.5 cm in diameter. The medial canthal lesion was symptomatic only by the patient's feeling of fullness and by a recent change in size of the lesion. The patient was unaware of the auricular lesion.

Early basal cell carcinomas were suspected and both lesions were excised and sent for histopathologic examination. Representative sections are shown in Figs 1 and 2.
