I very much enjoyed Otology, by Alan Gibb and Mansfield Smith. The book is divided into two sections: "Tympanomastoid Problems" and "Facial Nerve and Inner Ear Problems." The first chapter is well written and the figures are good. The second chapter contains excellent narrative, but the figures are taken directly from a surgical procedure. They are not at all clear and do not add anything to the text. The third chapter on tympanoplasty by Hough is absolutely superb. The narrative description of the techniques in tympanoplasty and the expectations for different techniques are very clearly stated. In the next chapter, Smith's discussion of the middle ear transformer reconstruction is excellent. House presents a chapter on otosclerosis that essentially is his instructional course from the Academy. It is superbly done and gives all the high points of the stapedectomy procedure.
