Stomal Recurrence

At the annual meeting of the American Laryngological Association in West Palm Beach, Fla, G. B. Snow, MD, Amsterdam, presented his experience in treating stomal recurrence following total laryngectomy with a radiation therapy and chemotherapy protocol. Dr Snow and his colleagues (A. B. M. F. Karim, MD, R. J. J. Versluis, MD, K. H. Njo, MD, and R. M. Tiwari, MD) used pulses of vincristine sulfate, bleomycin sulfate, and methotrexate sodium, which were alternated with fractionated doses of external beam radiation therapy. Four or five doses of chemotherapy were given to most patients. Although the number of patients presented was small, the results appeared to be promising. Three of the patients were alive 6.5, 2.5, and 2 years after treatment. Three others were dead, but only one of these died with persistent stomal recurrence.
