Using a wearable device (headset) to stimulate the inner ear through the skin electrically, Dr Dobie tested 20 patients with sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus, which was described as a substantial interference with their life-style. During a four-week period, the patients were asked to rate the severity of their tinnitus while wearing the device for an hour the first day, two hours the second day, etc, for a week. (Both the patients and the audiologist who administered the tests were unaware of whether they were using the active device or the placebo.) Reduction in severity was reported by two of the patients with the active device and by four of the patients with the placebo device. Fifteen patients had no relief with either device.
