Quality of life for the patient with head and neck cancer is a topic that is frequently discussed. However, most physicians are primarily concerned with treatment that is designed to improve the patient's survival. Most cancer clinical trials are designed to study the impact on survival of a particular forum of treatment. But quality of life remains an important issue, and recent investigative work by social scientists has resulted in the development of a useful tool to assess quality-of-life issues.
Barne R. Cassileth, PhD, director of Psychosocial Programs at the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center, Philadelphia, was a featured speaker of the Southwest Oncology Group in San Antonio, Tex, Jan 23, 1986.
