In Reply.—I thank you for the opportunity to respond to Dr Schwartz' letter. The recommended usual adult dose of amoxicillin is 250 mg every eight hours (1,000 mg per 24 hours), and this is the documented and published usual adult dosage recommended by Lederle Laboratory.

The patients in this protocol were placed empirically on 250 mg of amoxicillin three times a day (750 mg per 24 hours). The specific dosage design was formulated by Lederle Laboratories and, according to the results of our study, the patients on this dosage regimen had significant improvement—clinically, radiographically, and bacteriologically.

Minocycline (Minocin, Lederle Laboratory) is supplied in 100-mg capsules as well as 50-mg capsules, and the usual and recommended adult dose is 100 mg every 12 hours (200 mg per 24 hours).
