Treatment of Acute Bacterial Sinusitis

To the Editor.—In the January 1986 issue of the ARCHIVES, Mattucci et al1 report a study of the effectiveness of minocycline vs amoxicillin in the treatment of acute bacterial sinusitis. The dose of minocycline (Minocin) given to the adults was 100 mg twice a day, an appropriate dose. The dose of amoxicillin, however, was 250 mg three times a day, about the same as that given to a 4-year-old child. Since minocycline comes in a 50-mg capsule, the authors should have prescribed 50 mg of minocycline twice a day or, more appropriately, 500 mg of amoxicillin three times a day. Because of this underdose, the conclusions of the study seem suspect, at least to me. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
